Te Mako - Frequently Asked Questions

General Queries

When is Te Mako staffed?

Te Mako is staffed between the hours of:

9:30am - 5:30pm Monday to Friday.

9:00am - 3:00pm Saturday.

The building is not staffed during the holiday break (dates vary depending on year, but late December to first or second week of January) nor on public holidays.

You can still book to use any of our rooms and spaces outside of staffed hours, however this may incur additional cost or require a bond payment. More information on bonds can be found on our Room Rates page.

Do you have free wifi?

Free Wifi is available to anyone who books to use the space, or who attends as part of a booking.

It operates via a sign in system rather than a password, so you’ll need to click on the network called HCC-PUBLIC and accept the conditions on the browser window that pops up before you’ll have access to the internet.

Do you have carparks available?

There is a free public car park directly outside of our building between us and the Naenae Library. Times range from 60 - 120min for these parks, however there is free on street parking in the surrounding streets.

How do I best unload my equipment for the event?

We have a number of access points to the facility depending on what is most convenient for loading vehicles.

Meeting rooms: It is best to park in the carpark between our venue and the Naenae Library and use either the front door, or the side door between our building and Naenae Pharmacy. You will need to pop into the front desk so we can open it for you, but this door opens right into a storage area backing the meeting rooms Raupo 1 & 2.

Community Kitchen and Activity Rooms: We have a separate entrance in the rear of the facility that enters directly into the community kitchen and is accessible via swipe card only. This entrance is accessible via driveway next to Naenae Medical Center, which is off Treadwell Street and between two carparks. Unless you have already signed out a swipe card you will need to call reception on 0204625666 or come around the front so we can let you in.

Do you have storage available?

A limited amount of space is potentially available for long term users and groups using the spaces we have available. It is best to enquire with a staff member to see what is free and if it will incur additional cost. You will need to provide your own lock and provide reception with a spare key or combination code.

Please bear in mind that cannot store food, highly flammable objects, furniture, or other large items on your behalf.

Are your bookings rates inclusive of GST?

Yes our booking rates are inclusive of GST. We can provide you with a quote and invoice for your records if needed.

Are your facilities animal friendly?

Te Mako always welcomes service animals in any context to our premises, and while they get automatic access under NZ law the same rights to not extend to emotional support animals or pets.

If your booking involves having pets or animals on site please let us know and we will consider these on a case by case basis. In all instances we will request a bond be paid up front for this.

If you are dropping by to visit we ask you tie your pet up outside

Bookings scheduled outside of staffed hours

Do I need to turn on an alarm when I leave?

If you have a booking outside of staffed hours please note that our alarm system is automated. This means you won’t need to turn it on when you leave, or off when you arrive.

More information on alarms and our automated locking system can be discussed with a member of staff.

How can I access the building?

In the days leading up to your booking you need to make time to come in to speak to our receptionist and sign out a swipe card to access the building outside of staffed hours, as the doors will be automatically locked. We will need at least 15 minutes of your time to give you a tour of the space, run through health and safety requirements, and ensure you have all the information you need for your event.

Once the event is concluded you need to pop back in during staffed hours to give us the keycard back, or drop it in the keycard storage box on your way out.

Center Accessibility

Te Mako was built with accessibility in mind, but we are always looking for more feedback on how we can make our spaces more accessible to the community.

Please call or email us if you have any questions about whether the facility will be accessible to you.

Some features we have in place are:

  • Single level building, with no steps.

  • We utilise natural light where possible instead of using the overhead lighting.

  • Two separate, large, accessible toilets with handrails, one with a sliding door and one with a hinge door and a handrail to close from the inside. One toilet has an open shower and a baby changing table.

  • Service animals are always welcome in our facility. Emotional support animals and pets are not automatically granted entry in guidance with NZ law. For more information about events with pets or animals please see the FAQ above titled 'Are your facilities animal friendly?'.

  • All restrooms are non-gendered.

  • Directional signage includes iconography as well as text.

  • One of the prep benches in our community kitchen is at seated height. This is ideal for seated persons, wheelchair or mobility aid users, and children.
